Do you have to have a pilots license to fly an Ultralight?

December 6th, 2010 . by admin

In the US, you do not have to have a license or medical certificate to fly a true single seat ultralight, but in Canada, you must have an ultralight license.

I would hope so. An ultralight is still a form of aircraft, whether it has an engine or not. And airspace is still controlled, so I would imagine that you would need the pilots license in order to be qualified to know the regulations on where you are allowed to fly.

No, but you do need training on it. Check the FAA.gov web site :

No. For information on the rules concerning ultrtalight regulations, go to: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=b617d3b8b4932cd7a4bd5c1e7e872b1a&rgn=div5&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.3.16&idno=14
I have personally have flown ultralights and home-built aircraft in the past but have no interest in doing so again. I prefer to fly certificated aircraft.
    Good luck.

A pilot’s license is not required in the USA, to fly a legal ultralight aircraft. Some formal training is highly recommended, but also not required.

Nope. All you need is a pilot’s license if you can believe that! I personally think it’s really awesome. I would recommend that you have some basic knowledge of flight physics though. By the way, I’m getting my student pilot’s license, my dad was an aircraft mechanic for 30 years in the United States Air Force, and I’ve already taken a class on the science of flight, so I’m a reliable source.

You do not need to have a pilots license to fly an ultralight. However, you do need to get training. I don’t know where you are located at but this is an ultralight school in northern california that provides flight instruction for both ultralight and sport pilots. Check out http://www.freedomfield.com for more info.
